Run the workbench
The browser is a reader of Python results, not a second scientific implementation. Start from the installed checkout and the authorised Site01 CAS store. No public source download or invented replacement is provided.
Start it
Section titled “Start it”-
Check the scientific sidecar.
uv run --frozen python -I -m lunartrace.workbench --checkThis loads the frozen Site once, prints a provenance summary and exits. The store comes from
LUNARTRACE_SOURCE_STOREand has no default; the sidecar’s--storeoption selects another authorised replica. A missing blob is a refusal, not zero terrain or a synthetic result. -
Start two local processes in separate terminals, from the repository root.
Terminal 1: Python sidecar task workbench:pyTerminal 2: browser client task devBoth are long-running. Successful startup shows as listening endpoints and an HTTP response, not as an immediate exit code.
-
Open http://127.0.0.1:4317/.
The Python sidecar listens on 127.0.0.1:4318, and Vite proxies
/py/requests to it. The Lab editor uses 127.0.0.1:4319 when started. Stop your own processes with Ctrl+C when you are done.
The plain development path does not need a Cesium ion token; ion basemap imagery is optional display context, never numeric truth. If Python is unavailable, the instruments show their problem states; the browser must not manufacture an evaluation.
Isolated sidecar check
Section titled “Isolated sidecar check”When the default port is occupied:
uv run --frozen --group notebook python -I -m lunartrace.workbench --port 4328 --lab-port 4329This verifies sidecar startup only. The checkout’s Vite proxy still targets 4318, so do not mistake an isolated listener for the sidecar the browser is connected to. Leave another lane’s existing listener running.
Follow the research workflow
Section titled “Follow the research workflow”| Scene | First useful action | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Explore | Inspect Source/Method/Evidence and select a source ROI | Witness identity and standing |
| Analyze | Inspect Rows, choose τ, brush Cells, open Python/Lab | Exact Python values; note Cells are sampled |
| Compare | Save evaluated runs and restore a capsule | ROI and τ identities; no admission promotion |
| Publish | Export a Python numeric Figure and raw rows | Source, method and matching run/provenance |
| Present | Show Moon and Figure together | Visible standing and scientific limits |
Scenes are layouts over shared research state, not five different methods. See the scientific workflow for the steps and failure states, workbench instruments for the controls, and export for the difference between numeric Figures, screenshots and local run capsules.
